When my sister in law Emily and her long time partner Brittany reached out to me about capturing their engagement photos near Cody, Wyoming, I knew immediately this was going to be something special. They had their hearts set on an adventure session that truly reflected their love of the outdoors and their free-spirited connection. The destination? A completely random pull off called Little Bear Lake, nestled high in the rugged beauty of Beartooth Pass just outside Cody, Wyoming.
What made this session so incredible wasn’t just the stunning mountain backdrop or the crystal-clear waters of Little Bear Lake. It was Emily and Brittany’s energy and excitement that turned the experience into something unforgettable. From laughter-filled hikes to intimate moments framed by alpine vistas, every second was a celebration of their love story. They embraced the unpredictable elements of nature, from brisk mountain breezes to the golden glow of the setting sun (and a swarm of pesky mosquitoes), creating moments that felt as wild and free as their love.
If you’re dreaming of an engagement session that goes beyond posed portraits and cookie-cutter backdrops, Emily and Brittany’s adventure is the perfect inspiration. Keep reading to discover how they planned their session, why Little Bear Lake was the perfect location, and how you can create your own magical engagement experience that reflects who you are as a couple. Whether you’re mountain enthusiasts, travel lovers, or simply drawn to the beauty of the great outdoors, this post is packed with ideas and tips to help you bring your vision to life.
I seriously hit the jackpot when I married my husband. Not only did I get him in my life forever, but I gained a bonus sister who I absolutely ADORE! And now, I’m gaining another bonus sister because Emily and Brittany are finally tying the knot after over TWELVE years together! They met back in high school through Brittany’s cousin and have been pretty much inseparable ever since. Last May, Britt finally popped the question while they were on a trip to Puerto Vallarta. She took Emily on a sunset cruise across the gulf and ended the evening with a surprise that was way better than just a beautiful sunset—an engagement ring and a promise of love forever!
When they’re not busy planning their wedding, Emily and Brittany are off exploring national parks with their adorable Aussie fur baby, Boston. They’re also huge fans of catching Red Sox games, jamming out at concerts, or throwing epic parties with Brittany’s family. Seriously, these parties are legendary! These two are all about adventure, quality time, and nonstop laughter, and I just know their wedding is going to be just absolutely amazing and special as they are.
During an annual family trip to Cody, Wyoming, we originally planned to hike up to Gardner Lake Trail for those epic, jaw-dropping views. But, like any great adventure, plans changed! We found ourselves exploring all over Beartooth Pass until we stumbled upon the perfect spot—Little Bear Lake. It was like our own little “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” moment! We stopped, had a drink, and wandered the trails wrapping around the serene reservoir. Honestly, the beauty of Beartooth Pass can be summed up in just a few words: breathtaking, grand, and totally Bob Ross-worthy.
The Beartooth Highway, a stretch of U.S. Route 212, winds its way through stunning alpine tundra and lodgepole pine forests. Known as the “Highway to the Sky,” it’s hands down one of the most beautiful drives in America. Scattered along the route are trails and sparkling lakes, with endless picturesque spots to explore and soak it all in. The pass is usually open from mid-May to mid-October, weather permitting. The highway is prone to temporary closures due to unpredictable weather conditions at high elevations.
Emily and Brittany wanted adventurous engagement photos in Cody, Wyoming that truly reflected their love for the mountains and exploring national parks. They spend a lot of their summers together checking out trails at Mt. Rainier National Park or driving down to the Redwoods National Park where they always take a polaroid of each excursion they go on soaking up the outdoors together. They coordinated their outfits of white, brown, and green to compliment the lush scenery and epic mountain views that are best viewed during summertime in Wyoming! The neutral tones really helped them stand out against the vibrant tones of the landscape and bright blues of the alpine lake.
Emily and Brittany also chose to include a nostalgic Super 8 Film to their engagement photos! Another breadcrumb of their love story immortalized through film that they can look back on for years to come. If you’re curious about Super 8 Film and would like to know more, check out my guide on the medium here!
